tired and down :(

I know there's lots of strange things happening, wi the displacement of bodily fluid as it shifts from my ankles to my kidneys and then pssssssss' but I'm hot, and I definately don't mean sexy. Wi my Nora Batty bandages round my ankles. I did try cycling for the first time in my swadling bandages, and went to the school gates. Maybe I'm just greedy, once it was my dream to be able to cycle to school, and that was all. So why I beat myself up, because I can't cycle everywhere, I don't know.

  1. Sorry but I had a pretty good ride today. I've been going out for a spin after work each evening trying to get some fitness back. I cruised around on a 40 minute race on Sunday finishing mid-field. Tonight was the first time it really felt fast and, as least mostly, fairly easy. I was still using the little gears on the top half of the climbs but got most of the way up them at a reasonable cruise. And I still felt good when I got back after 15 miles in 55 minutes. Result!

  2. Is that very losely about 4mins a mile???? kind of???

Well done, I think I just need to give myself permission to be a bit ill. Instead I still keep trying to do what I do. And when I can't do it, I beat myself up!!

  3. That ride to school was a step on a much longer journey which I think you knew had to be started, and it gave you a goal that was realistic and achievable within a timescale that allowed you to reward yourself quickly enough.

What has happened now is that you need to have goals which will give you a rewarding achievement within sight of where you are now. I would suggest that (since Sheffield is generally downhill) you consider riding in towards Sheffield in easy stages - remembering that there are ways to keep down by the Sheaf and the railway line that can be cycled rather than go up the slight hill that the route for cars uses.

Consider doing this as a Sunday goal that gets you to the Midland Station (well you won't get a train from Sheffield Victoria these days) and you get a nice treat of a cup of coffee or better, before catching the train back to Dore.

Does Pat drive an old bus with steps or a new one for wheelchair access? You might begin by riding to Tesco (a bit closer to the City Centre than Beauchief) and coming back on the bus. Why not ask next time you have the Tesco trip.

Could your Hillsborough Thursdays begin with settng off early and booking the taxi to collect you from any point on the route in to Sheffield at the time he normally would be coming for you at Totley. You agree that he does not lose out on the fare but will come along the route and pick you up when he catches up or you let him know that you have pulled over. How about getting a bar chart up at the Hillsborough Park bothy in the Dore bike shop and the Spitfire and logging how far you have managed to ride each week. You might even give your radio presenter friend a progress report on how far you've managed to get before the taxi catches up each week, and he can buy you that drink when you reach the city centre and ride in to the Studios, or station. It would be brilliant publicity for the Hillsborough Park Thursday Groups, and if you get to the train station the option is then to catch a tram with your Class 1 Invalid Carriage out to Hillsborough.

I wonder if we can get you set-up with a head-cam to video your progress? Further thought - once you manage to reach a point opposite to Heeley, the Recycle/HDT guys might come out and ride with you in to the centre.

  4. A bike computer is worth thinking about, but it is easy to become a slave to them. It can be fun to log the mileage you are doing and set yourself the challenge of keeping up with or improving on that weekly mileage.
The only problem is that it can become too restrictive - having to keep up an average speed/time for a journey or having to go out to do some miles to keep up the weekly figures.
Taking a trip for a coffee sounds like a better plan!

  5. Yup, 15mph is 4 minute mile pace...
But I am riding Whitey, the velomobile, so 22mph on the flat is working but not too bad. I do have the extra weight to haul up the hills tho!
The guys I used to race against were doing 30mph at the races last week so I've still got some work to do to get back to my former glory...

  6. Im really pleased that you make these suggestions. But to me both suggestions, would take the pleasure out of cycling. It's not why I do it. I'm sure I could make it to the city, in time. But it would be sooo stressful, I wouldn't gain a thing, from enduring it. And thats if I was successful, I don't like to think how I'd feel, if I failed. It's like York, I'm really glad I achieved it, and the kids had a good time. But 'hand on heart' it wasn't that pleasurable for me. I was too stressed!!
